VV Photonics Initiative Selected for Presentation at an Investment Conference on Developing Slovenia’s Smart Specialization Strategy

On 24 April, 2015, Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy (GODC) invited Slovenia’s key economic and development officials to engage in the entrepreneurial discovery process and identify the country’s high-potential technology areas and product directions. Among the 170 groups that responded to the invitation, a partner of Fotonika21 submitted the initiative entitled “Fotonika VC”, which was chosen for presentation at an investment conference on developing Slovenia’s Smart Specialization Strategy. At the conference, which took place on the 15th and 16th of June at the Kino Šiška in Ljubljana,  the participants were addressed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Miro Cerar and the three Line Minister responsible for RDI and European Cohesion Policy, namely Alenka Smerkolj, Minister responsible for development, strategic projects and cohesion, Zdravko Počivalšek, Minister responsible for economic development and technology, and Dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič, Minister responsible for education, science and sport. The participants were also addressed by representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, the Chamber of Craft and Small Businesses of Slovenia, the Slovenian Rectors Conference, KOsRIS (Coordination of Independent Research Institutions of Slovenia) and representatives of the OECD.

The “Fotonika VC” initiative was presented by Boštjan Podobnik of LPKF Laser & Electronics. In the last decade, new developments, such as femtosecond and fiber lasers, sensors and smart integrated devices have introduced new paradigms into the field of photonics. The Fotonika VC initiative will tap into these developments with the aim of producing a new generation of industrial and medical applications at a technology readiness level competitive with world-market manufactured products (TRL 7 - 9). The Fotonika proposal brings together world-class research groups from academia with market leaders in industry, within a focused value chain at the highest level of technology, spearheading the smart specialization program in the field of photonics. Fotonika’s technological challenges and synergetic efforts are defined by emerging solid and fiber lasers as well as the photonic devices developed in tight collaboration between R&D teams, leading to a large growth potential. The final products are focused toward the fields of medicinal devices and smart industrial production based on the photonics platform, with the technological work packages being closely linked to those of the Key Enabling Technology of Europe, Photonics21.

LA&HA, a partner in new Horizon 2020 project – EuroPho21


The European Commission announced the results of Horizon 2020 ICT 26-2014 – “Information and Communications Technologies-Coordination and support actions” call.

The project Innovation and Implementation Strategy Photonics21 - EuroPho21 was excellently evaluated by The European Commission and was chosen for EU funding.
The EuroPho21 project will be implemented under the Photonics Public Private Partnership. The aim of the project is to strengthen the collaboration between the photonics community and the end user industry by facilitating dedicated end user workshops in the regions. In addition to this the national technology platforms will focus on linking up regional, national and European funding for photonics in Europe to increase the participation of photonics SMEs in Horizon 2020 calls by organizing national photonics workshops on European funding opportunities. As part of the communication activities the EuroPho21 project will highlight and present various national and regional photonics impact stories which outline the enormous potential of this exciting technology which is funded under the Photonics Public Private Partnership


The consortium combines 12 national technology platforms for photonics from Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, Greece, Finland, UK, Slovenia, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

CC BME in the News

On Thursday, May31st, 2012 the newspaper Delo published an article by the author Dragica Bošnjak that presented an overview of the first conference held by the Competence Center of Biomedical Engineering (CC BME). The article highlighted the ambitious goals of the consortium and how these goals will affect daily life, i.e. your fridge will measure your heart rate.
